I am a homeschool mother of 6. I don't have everything figured out, but I can help you with the experience I do have. Please join me as Christian mothers who seek answers through prayer in study in raising our children in a Godly way.

School in the Car

Last week we spent more time in the car than usual. Monday I went and picked up packages from the post office. Wednesday we had our homeschool coop, and Friday we had an unplanned trip to the chiropractor. The shortest of all these drives was 45 minutes one way. Here is what we have done in the past and what actually works for our family.

What We’ve Done in the Past

When we first started homeschooling, I would use bring all my kid’s workbooks with us wherever we were going. We didn’t work on them much. I got frustrated because my kids didn’t do much. They were constantly asking me for help. That didn’t last long because it made it frustratingly difficult to drive. It also ruined their workbooks.

Clipboards

Next, I tried putting on clipboards just the pages they were working on. This made it better because it didn’t ruin their workbooks, but it was still a safety issue.

What Works Now

Tablets

Now we have tablets that my kids can do for a good amount of the time. We use Amazon Fire Tablets. On those we have an Amazon kids plus. The kids are allowed to do school type things only on those. If they do other things on them, they get them taken away. I bought these only for school time.

Read-Aloud or History Podcast

I’m addition to this, I bring a read aloud for each school-aged child. They read at least 30 minutes. We also started listening to audiobooks or a history podcast for kids. These three things work super good for our family. They keep me entertained, and they make school enjoyable for my children.

Music or School Songs

In the car, we’ve tried all kinds of songs. We’ve listened to skip counting songs, fun holiday songs, patriotic music, skip counting songs, and The Good and the Beautiful musical multiplication. None of these things take much help from me, so they work well in the car.

Online Curriculum or Phone Apps

My older daughter tried a free trial of Teaching Textbooks. The app was on my phone. She loved it. That worked really well for road schooling. This next year we will most likely do IXL for math with her. I think that will be a relief with road school also. This daughter’s favorite school in the car is probably Supermarket Cashier Simulator. It gives her extra practice counting money. That makes me so happy because money is something she really struggles with, and she loves it.

Other specific apps we love using or have enjoyed in the car are ABC Mouse, Reading Eggs, and Rosi Mosi. All four of these are amazing programs that actually require the kids to learn.

Gameschooling

I’ve really wanted to try gameschooling on the road. There’s flashcards I’ve wanted to bring for my kids to play war with. I’ve also considered trivia based games.

What do you use?

Please tell me what you use for homeschooling when you’re driving. I would love to know.
