I am a homeschool mother of 6. I don't have everything figured out, but I can help you with the experience I do have. Please join me as Christian mothers who seek answers through prayer in study in raising our children in a Godly way.

Homeschool Spelling

For language arts our family does The Good and the Beautiful. I don’t like the spelling practice that is included. My kids still do it, but I also have them do a supplement. The Good and the Beautiful spelling didn’t seem to be helping my younger children particularly to learn how to spell. If we don’t use this to learn spelling, then what do we use? Is the spelling we do use effective and do we like it? Is there something I would like to do?

Homeschool Spelling

The first supplemental homeschool spelling curriculum we use for spelling is called Spelling Connections. It teaches spelling using word families and word patterns. I like using this spelling approach because I do think it has been helpful for my children. They get lots of practice spelling. However, they still misspell a lot of words, so I do wonder if there’s something better out there.

The other homeschool spelling curriculum we have used is called Spelling You See. I love that this spelling goes up to 6th grade. It also teaches about history in the passages the children copy. My children don’t mind it, and it is pretty hands off on my part.

If I felt like I could handle it, there is something I would definitely add to our homeschool spelling. When I was in public school we did weekly spelling tests, and I would love to add that to our spelling. I love that Spelling You Sew has me read the passages every week because it’s kind of like a spelling test. You might ask why I have t done weekly spelling tests. I’m not really sure why. It just feels overwhelming right now with everything else we’re trying to do. In the future maybe I will try to add spelling tests for my children that are doing Spelling Connections. In addition to spelling tests, I’d really like to look up an app where my children can practice spelling words for fun. We have a long drive anywhere we go, so it would give my children extra time to do spelling.

In conclusion, I really like Spelling Connections and Spelling You See for homeschool spelling since I don’t like the Good and the Beautiful’s spelling that’s included in our language arts. I also would like to do weekly spelling tests. Furthermore, I would like to have spelling apps for my children to practice spelling while in the car. I hope you find something to help you with your children’s homeschool spelling.
