Games We’ve played

We are blessed enough to have played quite a few games in our homeschool. However, I definitely have an infinitely long amazon list of games I’m hoping to purchase some day and play with my kids. I hope to tell you some of the games we have played and what I think about them in this post. To find out where you can purchase a game, click on the name of the game and it will take you to a different website where you can buy it.

Miss Bernard is a Wild Card

We just got this game and played it for the first time this week. We loved this game. My kids and I were laughing mostly the whole time. My child in kindergarten did get upset when her brother played a card that threw out one of the cards that she liked. In this game each player is making silly sentences. The sentences have different parts of speech. In order to win each round, however, the first two cards have to rhyme. The sentences end up being super silly. One of the cards is inappropriate and says naked on it. I would recommend throwing that card away. In spite of that card though, this game is a super fun way to learn parts of speech. My kindergartner also was able to practice reading as she read her sentence.

Sight Words Pizza

This game is a fun way to learn sight words. I got it for my kindergartner. Her, my 2nd grader, and I played it together. They enjoyed the game. The game allows the kids to make sentences, trace words on their hands, and read sight words. My kids enjoyed it and didn’t get frustrated when they didn’t win.

Money Bingo

This is so far one of my favorite counting money games I have bought. I have made and bought a lot of money games because one of my children really struggles, and I want her to practice learning money without being super stressed out. This one allows her lots of practice as she counts and recounts the change on her bingo card.

Exact Change

My kids enjoyed this game. However, it is honestly not my favorite game. It has educational value. Nonetheless, my child that really struggles can cheat the game. In the game you can play it like uno and just match colors or match amounts. My struggling child just plays it like uno which kind of defeats having her learn how to count money while playing. My kids did enjoy this game, but I bought it so my struggling child can practice counting change. It’s a great game as long as you’re not buying it for a child that really struggles.

Money Bags

This is another game I really enjoy playing with my kids. My children enjoy it, and it challenges my struggling learner. This game makes children make different amounts of change without sometimes using different types of money. For instance it well say to make 75 cents without using quarters. The fact that this game challenges my kids and they enjoy it makes it a game I would recommend to all parents.

Sum Swamp

If you have younger children that are learning how to add, this game is a ton of fun. My kindergartner doesn’t get sick of this game. Each time I have played it with her, she begs me to play it another time. That is a major win in my eyes. It has high educational value as the child has to add numbers together to know how far to move on a board. It also allows the child to practice deciding if a number is even or odd. For these reasons, I would highly recommend this game to parents.

The Allowance Game

If you’re looking for a game that teaches your children about having discipline, counting change, and being okay with not winning this is a great game. My kids really enjoy this game, yet we do sometimes have issues with being upset that we’re not winning. I personally like this because I think to a degree it’s important that my children learn that they will not always win in life. In summary, this is a game that we all enjoy.

Scrambled States of America

The last game I will talk about that my whole family enjoys is by Gamewright. It is called Scrambled States of America. My children and I always play this game more than once. They really enjoy it. To give them a little extra practice I like them to tell me the capital and state of the name and to point to the state on their map in order to let their card go in their winning pile. I should also mention when my younger children play, I never make it a race to find the card. We play it that any child that has the card that matches the description gets to send their card home. My oldest child would prefer to make it a challenge every time. However, he does ok playing it where it’s not a challenge with his younger siblings. To say how much I enjoy this game, I even played it with my husband for a date night.

I hope this post has given you some ideas of fun games to play with your family. It is not a list of all of my favorites or all the games that we play in our homeschool. This list is just a simple description of some games that we own and have played. I hope some of these help you with deciding whether or not to purchase a game for your children.
